Kuzhipilly beach, an upcoming tourist attraction
Of late, Kuzhipilly beach situated near Vypeen islands has been developing as a tourist hotspot following the footsteps of Munambam and Cherai. A watch tower for life guards is being constructed in the beach. Tourist amenities such as parking sheds, food courts and toilets have been planned to be built at the entrance.
A walkway 1.5 m in length dotted with angling shelters is also being considered.Yet another walkway passing through the paddy farms is likely to be built in future. These fields are cultivated with the ethnic ‘pokkali’rice variety alternating with shrimp farming in the remaining part of the year. ‘Pokkali’ is the organic variety of paddy unique to the state that is cultivated in the backwater-nourished coastal areas of central Kerala, in the interior islands of Vypeen, Kadamakkudy etc.
A sum of Rs.46 lakh has been sanctioned and set aside by Kerala Tourism for the purpose of renovating the Kuzhipilly beach. The scheme is awaiting the green signal from the government to start work.
At present family kite festivals are being organized at the beach during weekends as an annual event, with thousands of spectators turning up at the location to watch the fete. Kite flying has become a popular pastime among tourists and localites alike, and many amateur and expert kite fliers converge at the beach to participate in kite-cutting contests where the thread coated with a paste of rice and powdered glass is used to cut the rival’s thread.
Kites of different shapes, sizes and colours dot the sky as participants vie with one another in gay abandon. As part of the kite festival, stage shows such as rock bands, music concerts and group dances are organized that display the state’s rich cultural heritage. Kite-making workshops are conducted at the venue. Besides, games and poetry/painting contests with the kite as theme are also held for school kids. Food courts are also available at the mela.
The golden beach of Kuzhipilly is clean, shallow and ideal for swimming and sunbathing, and stands next only to Cherai which boasts of one of the best beaches of Kerala. Cherai beach, by virtue of its unique ambience that spells beauty, peace, harmony and balance, stands out among the other beaches, offering relief from the stress and pollution of modern civilization.
The newly beautified main beach at Cherai with the walkway adds to the charm and the high mask lamps make the beach enjoyable even at night. There are stalls that offer delightfully fresh sea-food and cool, tender coconut water.
